The play “The Lodgers”, based on the novel of the same name by Nenad Veličković, is directed by one of the most prominent contemporary theatre directors, Marko Misirača.
The story follows a group of people who, by force of circumstance, found themselves in the Museum of the City of Sarajevo during the first days of the war in 1992. It is based on real individuals and true events. Both the novel and the stage adaptation are dedicated to the Museum’s director, Bajro Gec, who fought to preserve not only the exhibits and the history of Sarajevo, but also the spirit of multiculturalism and the richness of the city’s tradition.
What sets this novel and the play apart from many other stories about the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the distinctive humor and warmth with which the characters defend themselves against the calamity that befell them.
