She was a brilliant actress, a committed artist, and an irresistible film star. Marlene Dietrich marked the 20th century in many ways.
Born at the beginning of the century in 1901 in Berlin, she died at its very end in 1992 in Paris. Her life was entirely devoted to art and resistance. At the age of eleven, she changed her name from Maria Magdalena to Marlene. She studied violin and developed an interest in theatre as a teenager.
In 1923, she appeared in her first film, and a year later she gave birth to her daughter. During the 1920s, she performed in theatres in Berlin and Vienna, appearing in classical plays, musicals, and films alike. The Blue Angel (1930) launched her international film and singing career.
In the early 1930s, she worked in Hollywood, starring in films directed by Josef von Sternberg and acting alongside Gary Cooper and Cary Grant, the biggest Hollywood stars of the era. These films shaped Marlene’s image as a mysterious femme fatale a look that remained her trademark for the rest of her life.
Dietrich became one of the highest-paid film stars of her time.
